In a review of the comorbidity of asthma and anxiety and depression in Puerto Rican children, Ortega & colleagues (2004) reported the result of a study conducted on the association between a diagnosis of asthma with certain mental disorders. The study presented research conducted among 1,891 children in Puerto Rico. Their research approach examines the relationship between asthma and specific DSM-IV-TR classified anxiety and depressive disorders. Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune illness characterized by impaired intestinal absorption. It produces atrophy of the intestinal mucosa and infiltration of lymphocytes, and its symptoms are abdominal cramping, intestinal gas, distention and bloating, chronic diarrhea or constipation (or both), steatorrhea (fatty stools), anemia due to folate, B12, B6, or iron deficiency (or all), weight loss with large appetite, or weight gain (Green & Jabri, 2003).
